We have the power to take our happiness in our own hands. We can choose to start our day with a smile on our face, a spring in our step and hopefulness that wonderful events will unfold in our lives that day. We have the option to go through life as a happy, fulfilled and emotionally balanced person, who eagerly awaits and is ready to receive what wondrous gifts life has to offer.
How do you wake up every morning? Do you feel happy, inspired and ready to take on whatever the day may bring? Or do you find yourself feeling like you could do with more sleep, unmotivated and dreading the potential events that might take place that day? It doesn’t have to be like that and the sooner you change this, the better you will feel within yourself and the world around you. Throughout this article, I will be discussing ways to help you feel happy, more willing and ready to take on the day so that over time waking up with a smile on your face will become second nature.
In order for you to feel refreshed and happy waking up, you must ensure that you get a good night’s rest as these two go hand in hand. Ensure that your room is dark and all the lights and distractions are switched off before you go to bed. Have a good think about what you spend your final 5 minutes thinking about before you fall asleep. Are these positive and happy thoughts? Or do you use this time to focus on your worries and what problems you have that need resolving? This is very important as the final 5 minutes worth of thoughts will have a great impact on what your subconscious mind focuses on. This is a great contributor to you waking up in an unhappy state as your subconscious has been overloaded with worry, fear and doubt from the night before. Instead, make sure to think positive, encouraging and happy thoughts during the final 5 minutes before you go to sleep and you will notice a great improvement in your mood the following morning.
If you have trouble going to sleep, use a countdown technique with an intention for what you want to achieve once you get to number 1. I like to count down from 10, telling myself calming and relaxing words which encourage me to relax and to fall asleep faster, as I’m focusing on my breath and my intention for what each number counting down from 10 to 1 represents. The focus on your breath being deep and slow will aid towards the relaxation of your muscles and take your mind off any distracting or negative thoughts. I will have a guided audio for this on the page I’ll be linking below so that you may follow along if you have trouble doing this on your own.
Just as the first 5 minutes before you go to sleep play a vital role in the restfulness and rejuvenation you feel when you wake, so do the first 5 minutes as you are coming out of sleep make an equal impact on how you will experience your day going. When you wake up feeling like you’re going to have an amazing day and expecting wonderful things to happen, you will be attracting these feelings to you, as even things that would have bothered you won’t seem so bad. When you wake up in a bad mood, anything negative will be magnified and seem so much worse.
Wake up with a smile on your face; list your intention for what you want your day to look like and have gratitude for this wonderful day and the delightful events you wish to appear in your life. Feel blessed and grateful that you have woken up in a lovely, comfortable warm bed. Pick one thing that you are extremely happy and grateful for that’s in your immediate vicinity. I like to pick my freshly washed bed clothes as I love the smell and the soft feel of them on my skin. This gives me something to be instantly thankful for as I already feel this sensation surrounding me. Then I go on to something else I look forward to, such as a lovely cup of tea to start my day. As I list about 3 to 5 things I’m grateful for that morning, and what wonderful events I look forward to happening that day, my mind is prepped and eagerly anticipating positive events to unfold.
If you treat the 5 minutes before sleep and the first 5 minutes when you wake up as a programming mechanism for how you would like your day to unfold, you will feel more empowered as your happiness can be created and influenced by you directly. Don’t let your surroundings and the people around you decide how your day is going to go, take matters into your own hands and watch as the days will get better each time to practice these new ways of thinking and turn them into positive habits.
